1950年，西南剿匪斗争中。一天，解放军侦察员小孙为追踪一个国民党土匪司令，来到扎旺寨山区。不料遭到苗王石朝山的围截，腿部负伤，被堵进山洞。危急时刻，一个苗族孩子引他脱离危险。但当孩子听说小孙不是苗家人时，又猝然惊恐离去。这个孩子就是给山魔王放牛的火娃。这天，寨里来了个杨神父，他借传教恐吓寨民，不许接近客家人。火娃听后，更加疑团满腹。晚上，老长工隆昌告诉他，曾有一支穷人的军队来过苗岭，叫红军。第二天，火娃来到山上，孙大哥告诉他，解放军就是当年的红军。山魔王带人又一次搜查小孙，被突起的“神火”驱散，孙大哥和火娃意外得救。原来，火是隆昌点的，他在暗中保护火娃。火娃拿着孙大哥给他的传单来找隆昌，隆昌含泪讲了这传单的来历……
