大学教授·大岛健藏（久松信美饰）在东京都内的小巷中被某人刺杀，警视厅搜查一课·十津川警部（高桥英树饰）和龟井刑警（高田纯次饰）将到场。根据第一发现者，被害者是“十津川…”留下这样的话后便咽下了气。大岛作为“线粒体学”的第一人是有名的人物，但十津川却完全不认识…。虽然很困惑，但十津川开始了搜查，发现现场附近的监控摄像头里有可疑男子的身影。十津川等人为了寻求线索，向准教授早濑由美（黑谷友香）和支援研究的生物关联公司社长中园宏司（中村俊介）询问了情况，得知了令人惊愕的事实。监控录像里的男子一定是两个青梅竹马的赤池庄五郎（松尾谕）。由美、中园、赤池3人是北海道·新十津川町出身的，3人发誓要永远保持友情，但是由美和中园以升入大学为契机来到东京。据说只有赤池留在当地继承了农业。因为赤池热心地致力于品种改良，由美介绍了对农作物很了解的大岛教授，但是大岛却不把为了品种改良的咨询而多次来访的赤池看作“十津川的家伙”，将他的搭配蔑视为“小学生的自由研究水平”。大岛教授临终前留下的话=“十津川”是指赤池吗？那之后，追到逃亡回故乡的赤池的脚步，十津川和龟井也去了新十津川町。然而，赤池却手持猎枪闯入町政府，将町的资本家浦野典史（萤雪次朗）等人作为人质固守在那里。这时，阻止好友暴走的由美跑了过来，十津川为了保护她，把枪口塞到了赤池…！赤池对对峙的十津川说：“收回札沼线废止！”虽然他提出了无理的要求，但是赤池的本意是……那之后，在遥远的东京，发生了更大的悲剧……!?
