故事讲述的塔山阻击战是解放战争时期我军一个著名战役：解放战争时期，中国人民解放军东北野战军第4、11纵队等部在辽沈战役中，为保障主力夺取锦州，于辽宁省锦州西南塔山地区对增援锦州的国民党军，进行防御作战。塔山阻击战鏖战6昼夜，我军先后打退国民党军几十次集团冲锋，共歼国民党军6000多人。塔山阻击战的胜利对保障攻打锦州部队的侧后安全，夺取锦州，进而取得辽沈战役全胜起到了重大作用。
