故事讲述革命青年容亨抵达北京后，于当时动荡的时局里，所发生的一段段曲折感人故事。容亨（潘志文）抵北京后，巧遇其姐容达（鲍起静）与姐夫梁节操（王伟），而亨此行乃代表南方政府为谈判事而来，为了解北京实况，往访任教于北京大学的顾学儒（刘纬民），得学儒之邀加入国事研究社，并得学生周启华（刘松仁）为私人助理。亨应邀到北京大学演讲，邂逅上海大亨之女施婷婷（米雪），婷婷初与启华相好，但遇上亨后，便对启华冷淡，启华无奈，唯决意退出情场，寄情于学运与革命事业。南北政府谈判破裂，亨被勒令离境，却暗中潜回，于幕后策动五四运动，深得启华及大部分学生支持，亨行踪被节操发现，遂设计捕亨。亨被判死刑，幸得婷婷及其父之助，得免死，改判终身监禁；而达与节操亦为此事夫妻反目。众人为了营救亨，牵引也一串串故事。
诸多小动物的性命危在旦夕之际，走来一只大象，狮子一看有不识趣的家伙闯进自己的地盘，顿时火冒三丈，责令猴子、野鸡和小鹿分别与大象比赛摘果子、拣石子和走沼泽地，令它没想到的是，大象的本领竟是那样大。不甘心输的狮子决定亲自上阵。
身负神力的少年周处（何与 饰）顽劣叛逆，总是好心办坏事，被吴郡百姓视为异类。某夜，周处为救城外孩童，杀死白额虎妖，不料却引得虎王（陈国坤 饰）降祸吴郡。在与虎王一战中，周处身受重伤。而后虎王施展妖法，吴郡生灵涂炭。失去超能力的周处，变为一个普通人，受到了百姓的恩惠和照顾，也意识到了自己之前的错误，明白了英雄的精神和责任所在。最后，周处浪子回头，身披父亲留下的天星铠甲，击败虎王。
