故事发生在上世纪中国第一藏书楼宁波天一阁。清末民初时局动荡，范家主人范榛却一直固守着祖宗留下的藏书。叔涵(黄磊扮演)是他收养的孩子，从小记忆力惊人，他喜欢上了父亲老友林正公的女儿林若云，两人相约私奔，却被家人发现，若云溺水身亡，叔涵流落江湖，遇到了与若云长得一样的混血姑娘明妮(马伊俐扮演)，两人陷入欲罢不能的恋情中。
