该剧是根据久住昌之创作、谷口二郎作画的同名漫画改编而成，原作目前正在《周刊SPA！》（扶桑社）进行不定期连载当中，讲述的是一名个人经营输入杂货商店的男子井之头五郎，在工作间隙前往餐馆当中吃饭的场景的故事。作品中登场的餐馆全部都是实际存在的，其中一个重要的特点就在于基本上都是一些大众化的餐馆，只不过作品中并不是单纯地描述食文化，而是着重表现主人公吃饭的场景以及心理描写。
在妓院做丫头的乡下女孩小月桂（李梦 饰），“个高、胸大、没裹脚”，让老板新黛玉（白灵 饰）很不满意，却深得洪门老大常力雄（胡军 饰）欢心，成为一代上海王的女人。常力雄在与同盟会代表黄佩玉（秦昊 饰）接触过程中被暗杀，小月桂孤助无缘，产女后流落乡下。
