本片描述的是周星驰遇上小偷钟镇涛，二人四处找工作，又误入黑社会。终于拜师学武，却又因与大师兄同时爱上师父之女张敏，被陷害而给逐出师门。这些情节不外刻意制造冲突，投机和低俗的姿态使人侧目，本片一场自由搏击大赛，周以为自己害死师父，甘愿捱打至重伤，血流披面却还要爬起来，充满强烈的虐待和被虐待的意味。周所演的人物几乎都是人格分裂的，正经和无赖，纯情又猥琐，共治一炉。喜怒哀乐的表情和动作的转变急速和突然。
