本剧讲述了弗林医生（里斯·谢尔史密斯饰）在医学院毕业来到NHS医院后发生的一系列有趣的故事， 于2002年11月11日在BBC首播，直到12月16日结束，共6集，英国版DVD在2007年10月29日发布。片名TLC的本意是 "Tender Loving Care"（细心护理），但是在本剧中更代表着 "Total Lack of Concern"（缺乏睡眠）。

本剧以吉川英治的《宫本武藏》做为原作，原作原本只写到岩流岛决斗而已，而本剧则是在后半部份衍生出岩流岛以后的故事。在岩流岛决斗的那一集，用了三十台摄影机，尝试制作出特殊的效果。，又请来颜尼欧・莫利克奈作音乐，喧腾一时，极有话题性。但是开演之后，收视率每况愈下，到后来可说欲振乏力。包括女主角米仓凉子等演员与编剧镰田敏夫等人，将整出戏包装得像是偶像剧一般，而这也正是前一出大河剧“利家与松”被批评诟病的部份所在。 本剧在播出期间也制造出一些负面的新闻：在第一集里的强盗袭击场面被认为有抄袭黑泽明导演的电影“七武士”之嫌，因此在全剧播毕之后，由黑泽制作公司提出著作权遭侵害的告诉，不过黑泽公司败诉。其次是剧中角色吉野太夫脱衣向宫本武藏献身，这一幕遭到部分艺文界人士抗议，认为身为文化人的吉野太夫不该被演成如此不堪的女性。此外在演员的方面，男主角市川新之助被爆出与一名女歌手有私生女的丑闻，并且又和女主角米仓凉子因戏结缘相恋，也着实热闹了一阵子。
1892年，北洋水师第二次访日归来。举国上下都欢欣鼓舞的庆祝这个凯旋的舰队归国之时，做为海军提督（海军司令）的丁汝昌却踌躇满怀，他深知邻国日本的海军正在大张旗鼓的购置战舰，以北洋水师为假想的敌人进行着战争准备，而朝廷中光绪皇帝听从了军机大臣翁同龢的奏折严禁北洋水师从外面购进弹药军火，这样一来已经到了需要武器更新，设备维修的北洋舰队就此被断绝了“粮草”，与日本海军的大张旗鼓形成了强烈反差。而丁汝昌多次上书痛陈利弊但是均未被受理，他预感到了危机在步步逼近。
