NHK第49部大河剧。以三菱財閥創業者岩崎弥太郎的視点出发,描述坂本龙马33年的生涯。本剧为原创剧本，将以幕末时首屈一指的企业家岩崎弥太郎的观点出发，岩崎弥太郎与阪本龙马同样出身土佐藩，两人之间曾有深交，弥太郎并且在龙马的海援队担任过会计职务。明治维新後，弥太郎也开创了三菱财团。 本剧为大河剧史上第二度将坂本龙马的一生搬上萤幕，上一回以龙马为主角的大河剧，是1968年的《龙马来了》（改编自司马辽太郎的小说）。本剧的剧本则由《HERO》等著名日剧的编剧福田靖所撰写。
