本剧为《绝命毒师》的前传，讲述律师Saul Goodman的故事。故事紧接上季结尾，阿布奎基（Albuquerque）律师Jimmy McGill遭到哥哥Chuck的背叛，于是回到伊利诺伊州的家乡西塞罗（Cicero）与童年死党Marco（Mel Rodriguez）一起策划一系列诈骗诡计。他们成功了，但Marco在他们最后一次干脏活时突发心脏病。Marco死后，Jimmy回到了新墨西哥州，他的人生似乎有了新的意义。他拒绝了圣达菲（Santa Fe）一家大型律师事务所的工作邀请，朝着刑事辩护律师「Saul Goodman」的方向迈出了一大步，他「清白正直」的日子一去不返。他的转型……已然开始。但是制片人反复强调，你不会在本季看到一个完整的Saul Goodman，「Jimmy McGill才是该剧的灵魂人物」，「我们要描述的是他的故事」，「我们不会这么快和他道别」。
