该剧以唐朝武则天时代为背景，对狄仁杰经典故事进行重新演绎和改编，讲述了狄仁杰在大唐名侦探大赛上崭露头角，却不料第一名被人抢走。紧接着又被渴望与他结伙办案的白元芳纠缠。机缘巧合下，两人组成“狄白”组合，专破奇案怪案以赚钱糊口。然而，正当他们逐渐走上正轨时，狄仁杰却发现一个巨大的阴谋缠上了自己。
