一九三九年五月三十日，潜伏的中共天津城委特科情报员熊阔海谋事的洋行倒闭了，上线老顾为掩护熊阔海被日本宪兵司令小泉杀害。特科行动组组长于挺除掉小泉的行动失败。熊阔海偷偷卖了小洋房，买到了极有价值的情报，冀东根椐地根椐他们的情报打了个大胜仗。老于谋划了新的暗杀小泉的行动，英勇的飞龙以自己的死为代价，除掉特高课课长中村。由于小泉去南京会给我方潜伏工作带来巨大危险，熊阔海决定不惜一切代价在天津除掉小泉。为了逼迫躲在北平的小泉现身，熊阔海让人在报上公开下战书，但小泉却把熊阔海的妻女抓了起来，威胁熊阔海投降。宁死不屈的妻子牺牲了，熊阔海坚定了刺杀小泉的信心，但小泉逃脱，上了去南京的火车。熊阔海在儿时朋友安德森的帮忙下，连夜驱车追上了小泉，替组织锄了奸，光荣地完成了任务。
大年三十，老北村马家孝顺儿媳田窗花，翘首期盼丈夫回家过年，等来的却是一纸离婚协议书。丈夫闹离婚、女儿不省心、村民账务无法偿还，而就在此时，噩耗传来，自己的父亲又突然离世。田窗花尽孝公婆，令二老动容，宁认儿媳不认儿。田窗花离婚了，并费尽周折，终于将欠村民的钱解决了。此后，在党和政府的关怀和帮助下，她将金湖山庄收归村里，又带领老北村村民开发乡村旅游，办冰雪节等，把金湖山庄经营的有声有色，而后，她又意外发现婆婆的剪纸是民间艺术瑰宝，创办了民间剪纸艺术文化公司。再后，田窗花收留落难丈夫，她的爱情发生了逆转，丈夫重新追求她，叛逆女儿也走上正途。她应约去北京参加中国非物质文化遗产传承交流大会。
这是四个女人的成长史。故事展开于1927年战火纷飞的江西，泼辣的农家女陈满金、来自上海的知识女性倪之慧、地主家的小姐蔡福、帮助过红军的女孩玄易，因为不同原因参加了红军，走进革命队伍。她们共同经历了瑞金时代，在长征前夕各奔东西，直到1948年解放前夕在上海再次聚首，而此时，陈满金、倪之慧、玄易都已经成长为坚定的革命战士，蔡福则脱离革命，她们的友谊和人生面临着新的考验。1949年上海解放后，她们再次别离。1978年改革开放，命运让已是古稀老人的她们再次聚首，此时经历了生生死死的她们华发之年共享夕阳。
